Sexism In The Super Bowl

Did you know the Super Bowl is the most watched television event in America? Last year, a record breaking of 111 million viewers watched the Super Bowl. Half of the viewers were women. Even if you do not like football, you watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. For a 30 second commercial during the Super Bowl the cost $3.5 million.

Football is a very physical sport, so the commercials mimic it using masculine products like beer and cars. When you will see a women during the Super Bowl, they are a Cheerleader or in a commercial just to get the men’s attention. A prime example for this are the Go Daddy commercials. A Go Daddy commercial consist of beautiful women promoting the website. To get a lot of traffic to their website, the commercials entice their audience to visit their site to see more glamorous women - godaddy.com.

If a women does not like football, she is watching the Super Bowl for the commercials. Why are there not more (or any commercials) for women? Studies show that women make up a large percentage of household item purchases. It would be smart for advertisers to make more commercials for women during the most watched television event in America. If you are on twitter look for #notbuyingit to see what other people have to say about the sexist commercials.

  1. I would just like to make it known, that last night I added a comment to this posting. Somehow it was deleted..... This is for a grade, please let it be known.

My comment pertained to the David Beckham commercial during the Super Bowl. While I can agree that most advertising is geared towards men, I can honestly say that I am sure that there are plenty of commercials also geared towards women. One example of this is the David Beckham/HM underwear commercial. I am certain that most guys turned their heads when they saw a mostly naked David Beckham posing in his new underwear ad. I honestly believe that while this is geared towards men, I feel that it underhandily gets the attention of men through their wives and girlfriends. Since women in a relationship are more prone to buying the male their clothing, the sex symbol that is David Beckham entices them to buy David Beckham/HM underwear in hopes that David Beckham comes with them at the time of purchase.

The other underhand in these scenarios is the fact that beautiful women are in all the men's commercials. This is an underhanded attack on the women in men's lives, leaving them feeling less than adequate to fufill men's needs for a skinny girl in their lives. So these commercials are not only getting the attention of the males, but they are getting the attention of the females as well, by making them feel like they need to compensate somehow, or that they must strive to be the beautiful women in the commercial by using their product.

However, I most definitely agree with this post. But I feel the it is more multifacetted than just focusing on men.

  2. I agree, Go daddy provides sexism by Giving all women a sexy appearence, in a way that men fantasize on a regular base. Women are sex object in these commercial and that attracts all kinds of audiences to pay close attention and get familiarized with the go daddy commercial in a sexual appeal.
